According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, Moose Jaw had a warm but wet month of April, mainly due to a record-breaking rainfall. 

Moose Jaw received 30.4 millimetres of precipitation in April, which is well above the norm of 17.6 millimetres. Most of that precipitation came from a record rainfall on April 30.  

“Twenty-nine point seven millimetres of the 30.4 that fell came from on that day, so before you had only 0.7 millimetres, which is barely enough to wet the pavement,” said Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang. 

Moose Jaw led the province with the largest percentage increase from normal at 173 per cent. It was the 33rd wettest April in Moose Jaw in 120 years. 

As for temperature, Moose Jaw was just slightly warmer than normal. The monthly mean temperature was 6.8 degrees, 1.6 degrees warmer than the normal of 5.2 degrees. 

This was the 25th warmest April in the city in the last 129 years. 

Looking forward, Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting the above-average temperatures to continue into May and into the summer. 

However, we can expect some precipitation to begin this month. 

“On the positive front in the shorter term, we do have another weather system moving through the province early next week and it does look like it’s going to be bringing more significant precipitation across much of Southern Saskatchewan as well as the rest of the Prairies,” Lang said. 

According to the forecast, the rain is expected to begin on Monday and into Tuesday with a 60 per cent chance of showers on Wednesday.
