They serve our country every day and for the next month, members of the military at 15 Wing Moose Jaw will chip in a little more in support of local charities.

The annual Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign (GWCC) kicked off Tuesday morning, with several events lined up at the base this month to raise money for several local organizations.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for (us) to reach out within the unit itself and within the community," said Capt. Steven Davies, chair of the 15 Wing GWCC group, which has been split into teams to see which of them can raise the most money through October.

Davies says the fundraising events will include a chili cook-off and a "Hawk pull" to see which team can pull a Hawk aircraft the furthest on the tarmac.

15 Wing Base Commander Colonel Alex Day enjoys the GWCC for what it brings to the community and the camraderie it inspires amongst the participants.

"I would say most, if not all, of the members of the (Canadian Forces) join in order to provide service to Canadians," Day said. "So giving back to the community in this respect is a way to help express that."

All money raised will go to the United Way of Regina (there is no United Way in Moose Jaw), which then disperses the money to various charities, including many in Moose Jaw like the Moose Jaw Health Foundation, Moose Jaw Humane Society, Hunger In Moose Jaw, and the Moose Jaw Family YMCA.

The goal for the 15 Wing GWCC is $40,000. If you would like more information you can follow them on their Facebook page
