A significant number of houses in Moose Jaw were without water Thursday after a major water main break at the intersection of 14th Avenue NW and Caribou St West.

Luckily for most, water was restored last night, however, the 1400 and 1500 block of Hochelaga Street West is still without water.

A water truck has been set up in the area for affected houses to use, but water should be restored Friday afternoon or evening.

The issue was caused after a significant break occurred due to an aging cast iron pipe.

Director of Public works for the city of Moose Jaw, Darrin Stephanson, says while most of the issue has been fixed, there's still more work that needs to be done.

"What we like to do is a temporary repair. Our job is to get in and get out, it's not to do large digs or start digging up a block and replacing massive sections of pipes, that's what our capital program is for and you need to plan that out and for the disruption that it causes. Typically, we're looking to put a clamp on for a hole that's punched through the pipe so that the repair is done and we can get the line back in service and end the disruption to customers. In this particular case, the condition of that line is quite poor, and we were unable to put a clamp on it. The section of pipe, all of it, was corroded and rotten. What we did was put a plug in it for now, and then we will have to come back and actually remove and replace some larger pieces of pipe so we can complete that repair."

Stephenson says that work will take place at some point in the coming months.

The break ended up leading to some disruptions in other areas outside of Moose Jaw as well, including Caronport. Stephenson says however that the disruption to the community west of Moose Jaw would have been minimal, as Caronport has its own reservoir.

UPDATE: The City of Moose Jaw is advising residents that due to a leaking valve; water will be once again temporarily shut off to customers affected by yesterday’s water main break in NW Moose Jaw so crews can make the necessary repairs. The shut off will occur this afternoon beginning at 1:30 and expected to last until 4:30 at the latest. The City apologizes for any inconvenience.
