Al Schwinghamer has decided its time to step aside and let some one else run the city as he considers his health and well being.

Mayor Al Schwinghamer has silenced the rumors in Moose Jaw and fueled some others, as he has announced he will be retiring from the mayor's office this fall.

Schwinghamer was elected as mayor in the 2000 election after Ray Boughen retired as mayor. Before that he was a member of council and a city engineer for 20 years.

"It’s been a good six years! Six years that I'm extremely proud of. Six years of continued development that we have seen in Moose Jaw. The last three years have been a little more difficult than the previous three but we have been able to maintain a very positive relationship with our provincial government, our federal government, and a lot of our corporate people."

You may remember back in March we brought you the story that Mayor Al was diagnosed with prostate cancer, of which he is now recovering, and he says that definitely played a factor in his decision to retire. "There's no doubt about it that when your health gets involved and changes you certainly take a look at your priorities in life."

When asked if he had any last words for his city, Mayor Al had simply this. "Oh, they might not have seen the last of me yet!"
