As former Warriors gathered for their annual alumni golf tournament this past weekend, it was also a chance to reminisce about the Moose Jaw Warriors’ historic season this past year.

The Warriors won their first WHL title during the 2023-2024 season in its 40-year history and competed at their its Memorial Cup in Saginaw, Michigan.

Former Warriors captain Troy Brouwer said the championship run is something that the team will never forget and they will always have that bond.

He even said he had a unique connection to goaltender Jackson Unger.

“Jackson Unger is actually my neighbour in Calgary, so we were keeping tabs on him and watching. My wife was talking to his parents being like ‘Are you going out for the game?’ Absolutely,” said Brouwer.

Brouwer played with the Warriors from 2001 to 2006. He was named captain of the team in 2005 and won the WHL scoring title that same year. This past year, Jagger Firkus joined Brouwer and Jayden Halbgewachs as the only Warriors to win WHL scoring titles. Brouwer was inducted into the Warriors and Legends Hall of Fame on Jan. 12.

Brouwer went on to play 14 seasons in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers. He retired from pro hockey in 2021 and is now a pro scout with the Blues.

He said what really impressed him about the Warriors’ historic run was the contributions from the younger players.

“Even the young guys that are coming in played amazing roles for the teams because that’s what it takes is everybody on that roster,” Brouwer said.

Discover Moose Jaw also had the chance to speak with Russ West, who played for the Warriors from 1989 to 1993. He had the same feeling as Brouwer that the championship was great for the franchise and the city and he was able to catch some of the playoff games in person.

The Warriors open their 2024-2025 regular season on the road against the Brandon Wheat Kings on Sept. 20. Moose Jaw will raise their championship banner the next night on Sept. 21 when they host the Prince Albert Raiders at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.
