Unattended cooking is being blamed for a fire Monday evening that caused $30,000 in damage to a multi family townhouse in Moose Jaw's Sunningdale.

Firefighters were called just after 7pm to Arrowhead road and arrived to find a very large fire escaping the kitchen area, spreading to the exterior. Crews jumped into action and stopped the fire from going any further.

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Russell explains how the fire started;

"The cause was accidental, it turned out it was a cooking fire. The occupant inside was cooking with oil and unfortunately it got away from him. The fire was contained to the kitchen, but the kitchen will have to be completely renovated".

There was substantial damage to the unit and fire officials are reminding us to always pay attention while cooking as it's reported to be one of the leading causes of fires during the holidays.

"There were some minor burns to the occupant who was treated by EMS on the site. Other than that everyone else was fine".

On Sunday, substantial damage was caused to an apartment complex in the city's northeast corner. The cause of fire is currently still under investigation, but thanks to the owners of the buildings keeping it up to code and having fire drills on a regular basis, everyone made it out okay.
