The Moose Jaw Humane Society is at capacity when it comes to cats at their shelter, meaning they have put a temporary freeze on taking in healthy stray cats.

As of Thursday, the shelter has 85 cats and 14 dogs up for adoption.

The humane society is asking that, if you see a stray cat that appears healthy, leave it alone and do not feed it.

“If they're healthy looking, they're fine, just leave them because we just can't take in any more,” said Moose Jaw Humane Society Fundraising Co-ordinator Donna Fritzke.

You can help with the influx of stray cats by keeping your cat indoors and being sure they are spayed or neutered.

The humane society will continue to take in stray cats that appear injured and need attention.

To help reduce capacity, the humane society is having an adoption event all next week. Starting Monday, you will only need to pay the $100 spay/neuter deposit, which will be returned once the cat is spayed or neutered. Meanwhile, adult cats that are already spayed or neutered as well as have had their shots can be adopted for $25.

“We're very excited about it. We want to be able to make sure that all these animals get a good home, and obviously, that's our mandate is to get these guys the best life that they can possibly live,” said Fritzke.
