Even though the threat of a summer
election no longer exists, our local federal representative is ready
for when it does come. Palliser Member of Parliament Ray
Boughen is back at home after the Spring Sitting wrapped up in Ottawa last week.
Right at the end of the session, the
Liberals and Conservatives shook hands of a deal to co-operate on
possible reforms to the Employment Insurance system, avoiding the
election. Boughen believes this is what voters
would have wanted.
"There was no one that I knew of
that wanted to have an election. We were told by constituents 'just
get the job done and don't worry about elections.' We heard them loud
and clear. It was good to see both the government and opposition work
together to make sure that an election wasn't going to happen this
summer."
Boughen doesn't believe the opposition
will force an election in the fall either, although he admits it is
possible. He told us if an election is called in the not too distant
future he intends to run again.
