Finance Director Brian Acker looks forward to seeing results of the Citizen Budget

Moose Jaw city councillors and employees have heard many "talk the talk" when it comes to the city's budget.  Now, they're letting us "walk the walk" with a new online budget tool.

The "City Of Moose Jaw's Citizen Budget" allows users to go through every service covered by taxpayer dollars, and decide whether to add funds, remove funds, or leave the funds as they are in the current budget.

"It allows you to be the city councillor or the mayor in terms of the budget process," explains city Finance Director Brian Acker.  "At the end of that process (the online Citizen Budget) you'll either come up with some savings overall, or you'll need some additional funding in terms of taxes."

This past week council proposed a 3.62% property tax increase for the coming year.  In addition, there is a record amount of money to be spent in the 5-year capital budget, and much more work in the 10-year plan that is currently unfunded.

In addition to planning the budget, the city is looking for other feedback, says Acker. "Also included are questions in terms of our capital infrastructure, and overall satisfaction with city services."  Acker says they will prepare a report from the results of the Citizen Budget to see where resident's priorities lie.
