Carnie's Comments

September 28th, 1972 - 50 years ago.  If you're 55 or older, you likely remember where you were and who you were with.

It was 50 years ago today that Paul Henderson scored late in the game, completing an exciting comeback, as Team Canada beat the Russians, 6-5 in one of the most exciting hockey games of all time.

The win gave Canada the championship in "The Summit Series".

I was in grade 2.  I raced home at lunchtime to watch the game but was summoned by my mother to go back to school at 1 o'clock.  I couldn't believe it.  I refused.  She got angry.  Off to school I went.  Devastated, I was.

When school reconvened, it was all about the game.  Our teachers already had the televisions on.  I was so happy.  We watched, we cheered, we hugged when Henderson scored.

Thank goodness those educators at Sherwood School in Regina understood the magnitude of what was unfolding that day.

That game, that goal, brought our country together.

And where were you in '72?
