Carnie's Comments

It was breaking news on the Canadian Press wire at 10:06 AM yesterday.  The newsflash read:

"Davies scores Canada's first ever World Cup goal.  Alphonso Davies scored against Croatia to give Canada its first-ever goal at the men's World Cup."

It was so exciting.

But then, just before noon, another newsflash:  "Canada has been eliminated from the FIFA World Cup following a 4-1 loss to Croatia..."

Yes, the elation was short-lived.

I watched most of that soccer game.  It was disappointing.  I had my hopes up.

Then, as I did some channel surfing , I learned Team Canada had won the Davis Cup Championship, the premier international team event in men's tennis.

Montreal's Felix Auger-Aliassime won his singles match, clinching the victory.

Then it dawned on me.  Instead of suffering the agony of defeat, I could have experienced the thrill of victory.

I should have been watching tennis!
