There is a new protective service role in Caronport.

The Ministry of Corrections has appointed Randy Jesse to be the town's new Community Safety Officer.

Jesse retired 3 years ago from a 34 year career in the Moose Jaw Police Service, where he took on many responsibilities, making him extremely qualified for this position.

His goal is to create a safer, more secure community and help educate people on how to do so.

Mayor of Canport, Daniel Buck says "The community has been in need of enhanced policing presence for a while now and we feel that Officer Jesse’s regular patrolling of the village will help address local safety concerns. Traffic enforcement is a big concern within our village because our streets are also our sidewalks, and with 3 schools within the community there is a lot of pedestrian traffic."

Jesse will be able to enforce driving and parking violations and provincial Acts such as Traffic Safety and All-terrain Vehicles.

He will also be visiting local schools to educate students and parents about road safety and how they can protect and secure property from break and enters.

Daniel Buck tells us " We have a lot of Kids that are on the streets so just educating students and parents about safe driving practices. Also the Kids, they have to be aware of vehicles. Also, there's break and enters, so how we're able to secure property, our own possessions, and houses."

Jesse will also be working as peace officer with the RCMP to investigate and prevent small crime within the community.

Buck also says " We are policed by the Moose Jaw RCMP. So, he will be working with them in conjunction with identifying concerns and if there's reports of mischief or damage or theft, he can investigate some of that along with the RCMP."

For now, Jesse only has jurisdiction in Caronport but that's hoping to be expanded to the surrounding areas in the near future.
