With no federal loan in place, the Canadian Football League is canceling the 2020 football season.

Of the $30 million loan that the CFL asked for, $20 million would have been paid to players, $8 million for the Winnipeg-based hub and $2 million for a contingency fund. The federal government denied the league's proposal.

CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie said in a media release today that the league is fully committed to 2021, with the pursuit of a vision of a bigger, stronger and more global CFL.

This will mark the first year since 1919 that the Grey Cup will not be awarded.
