The City of Moose Jaw has made several changes to its parking patio and seasonal boardwalks policy to encourage more businesses and groups to take advantage of the program.

The changes were passed unanimously during city council on Monday. Last year, there were two parking patios approved, affecting four parking stalls.

“I think they were very good and I hope we can promote them and certainly attract people to our downtown core. I think they were very good,” said Coun. Doug Blanc.

Director of Planning and Development Michelle Sanson outlined why the changes were made.

“After last year as our inaugural year with the parking patio program, we wanted to build on that and include some amendments and some housekeeping amendments that we saw that the policy did require,” said Sanson.

The amendments to the policy include the addition of public parking patios.

nd they will be waived for a second year.

The current fees to rent out seasonal parking stalls with parking meters is $7.50 per day for one stall plus $3.40 for each additional stall or a flat rate of $1,100 for the season plus $500 for additional stalls.

A new amendment reduces the fees by 50 per cent for parking stalls without parking meters.

A beautification promotion will be happening in 2022. The Downtown Moose Jaw Association will choose the most “creative/beautiful” summer parking patio or seasonal boardwalk in 2022 and the winner will have their 2023 fees waived.

Other changes to the policy include public washroom requirements as per Saskatchewan Public Health, adding the city as an additional insured to the applicant’s insurance policy and allowing winter season sidewalk sales.
