It's always a joy to set up decorations for the holidays, but be aware of some of the danger they may pose to your pets.

Cats are always a big concern, as they are attracted to many decorations such as tinsel and strings of lights, so you must always watch out for them.

Poinsettias are also a concern, but not as much as people believe, explains Vet Tech at the Moose Jaw Animal Clinic, Daniel Novecosky.

"It does take quite a bit of ingestion for them to cause big problems. But the biggest thing that you'll notice first with the poinsettias is the irritation with the mouth. Sometimes it will be very red and the cat won't be too happy with you looking in there."

Something else to be mindful of is Christmas baking. It may be a holiday treat to us, but it can be deadly if ingested by a pet.

"The biggest one would be chocolate. Although chocolate is delicious, it is not safe for them to eat so it depends on the actual type of chocolate as well. When you go for the more pure cocoa that one is a lot more toxic than your milk chocolate."

And although it's not food, cats still like to try and eat or chew decorations – something which Novecosky says can prove to be quite harmful.

"When people put tinsel on their actual trees, or on the mantel, cats unfortunately like 'string-like' things and these are shiny, so they are very attracted to them. They often play with them and then, usually by accident, eat them. And unfortunately, that type of ingestion of that object like the tinsel can lead to a very unfortunate consequence."

A cat's sharp teeth could also easily puncture the insulation around electrical cords, so make sure any lights you hang are unplugged or out of reach when you leave.
