Dates have been set for a public inquest into the death of a Moose Jaw man who died at the Saskatoon Regional Psychiatric Centre in 2017.

The inquest will be held Sept. 28-Oct. 2nd at the Sandman Hotel in Saskatoon.

Fourty-six-year-old Otto Hansen was found unresponsive in his cell at the RPC in Saskatoon on Oct. 25, 2017. Lifesaving attempts were made with an automated external defibrillator.

In 2011, Hansen pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of a Moose Jaw woman, Deborah Lynne Smith, in 2009 in her Chestnut Avenue home.

He had been sentenced to life with no eligibility of parole for 14 years.

Inquests are held whenever people die at a jail of a correctional facility, unless the coroner is satisfied the death occurred of natural causes or was not preventable. The purpose is to determine who died, when and where that person died and the medical cause and manner of death. A coroner's jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.

Coroner Blaine Beaven will preside at the inquest.
