Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Moose Jaw and the surrounding area.

Long periods of very cold wind chills are expected. Wind chills are expected to dip below –40 degrees tonight.

Overnight lows of near –30 degrees Celsius or colder are expected with light winds for wind chill values of –40 or lowers.

Environment Canada says conditions will improve on Thursday, but some areas may see a return of extremely cold temperatures Thursday night.

Residents are reminded that extreme cold can put their health at risk. Some cold-related symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

Frostbite can develop within minutes to exposed skin with extreme wind chills.
