There were no easy points on Monday night at Cornerstone Christian School.

The Cornerstone Falcons hosted the Caronport Cougars in a tight back-and-forth battle in the Moose Jaw High School Senior Boys Volleyball League. The home team eventually came out on top with a five-set win (25-23, 26-24, 21-25, 24-26, 15-6) over the Cougars.

“It was a five-set battle with all five sets being close, tight game which is good to have,” said Cornerstone head coach Lee Behrns.

For the most part, the Falcons would take the early edge in the sets, but Caronport showed a lot of resilience to battle back each time.

Both teams weren't without their mistakes in the game, but both felt they were coming away better after battling it out.

“We definitely had some good moments, what got us was the moments where we lost focus, lost communication, but we did have some great desperation, great work ethic, but it just wasn't quite good enough,” said Cougars coach Ben Banting.

“The biggest thing we've got to work on is working as a team, being a cohesive unit and working for each other.”

The Falcons have had a good start to the season and Behrns said the Cougars gave them a good test in this match.

“They're an uptempo team and they work hard on every single point,” he said. “We ended up too close for comfort in a lot of games.

“I had one guy come in the huddle and say that he was exhausted after five games, so that tells us that we've got to get our conditioning up.”

Behrns did like the intensity that the team played with and how they adjusted to being without one of their setters for the game.

“They slowly got better and adjusted to it,” he said.

“We've got to work on our tip coverage and making that first contact count because a lot of those first contacts were ugly, so we've got to be making sure that they count.”

Caronport will be back on the court on Tuesday night when they host the Vanier Vikings as part of a doubleheader out in Caronport. The Cougar girls are on the court first against the Spirits at 6:15pm, followed by the boys game at 8:00pm.

There's five games in total on the Tuesday night schedule in High School Senior Volleyball. Central heads to Rouleau in girls action at 6:15pm, while the Cyclone boys host Rouleau at 8:00pm.

The Peacock Toiler boys hit the road to Avonlea to face the Eagles at 8:00pm.
