A fire broke out in the grain elevator of Spring Valley, Saskatchewan sometime in the evening of August 24th and completely destroyed the building.

Carloyn Message, who witnessed the blaze and whose husband is apart of the volunteer fire department that battled the fire, said the elevator was "already engulfed" by the time firefighters showed up. She said that it was "an older wood elevator that had grain in it" so there was nothing much that could be done to save it.

Nobody was injured and damp, calm conditins allowed the fire to be easily contained so no further damage was done to the area.

"We had rain a couple of days before," explained resident Elaine Scheller, "grass was nicely (and) neatly mowed and there was a very heavy dew (that) night, and no wind."

Scheller said residents are sad to see their historical landmark reduced to ash, but are grateful no one was hurt and nothing else was damaged from the fire.

The cause of the blaze is still unknown.

Spring Valley is approximately 62 km South of Moose Jaw.
