Moose Jaw was the host of a major provincial cowhorse show at the end of July.

The Four Lakes Cowhorse Show came to the city for the second time on July 23rd and 24th.

The show is produced under the Saskatchewan Reined Cowhorse Association. The organization hosts a variety of cowhorse shows across the province.

“We’ve been running it (the Four lakes Cowhorse Show), I think this is our 6th year. When we first started running this show, we used to run it at Fort Qu’Appelle... then it grew so big, we had so many people wanting to attend like riders and horses; that we had to move to a larger facility and that’s how we ended up in Moose Jaw,” says Tracy Brand, one of the organizers of the Four Lakes Cowhorse Show. The organizers are planning to bring back the event next year as well.

In short terms, a cowhorse show is a competition where horse riders demonstrate their skills in particular ways of herding cattle.

The event hosted dozens of riders from across the province and Alberta.

There were 12 divisions that had 12 winners in 4 different categories of riding.

The four categories are herd work, rein work, box work, and fence work. Each category has several different divisions that become more advanced as the riders’ progress.

The riders who attend the show in the Non Pro divisions can progress to the next level based on how much prize money they earn.

“If you get to a point where you’ve earned $500 in prize money then you move to the next class and so on. Then in the next category if you earn $2500 and if you earn more than that, you go up to the next class. So, you progress, the higher you earn the higher the level you have to compete at,” says Brand

Brand also shares that there were many local people as well as the riders’ friends and family who came to watch the show, which resulted in full stands throughout the weekend.
