What to do when frost hits your crops? Andre Bonneau from Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food sheds some light on the situation.
There's a chance of flurries in the forecast this week and the threat of frost killing pastureland is imminent.
With frost comes the risk of nitrate accumulation in plants.
Andre Bonneau is a Forage Conversion Specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food. He says nitrate accumulation is only a problem for annual plants.
"There's very rarely a problem with perennial grass and legumes. The problem is mainly in your annuals like barley, wheat, millet, and oats."
Bonneau adds most plants can recover from a light frost, but when a killing frost happens, the crop should be taken down right away.
