A Saskatchewan based solution is being made to combat dwindling wildlife habitat in the province.

The Habitat Trust is back for its 40th year with a brand new program aiming to secure wildlife habitat; it's called Adopt an Acre.

Darren Newberry, Habitat Coordinator for the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, explains why the new program is vital.

"It's important because to this day there is lots of habitat that's getting destroyed daily, so it's important for organizations like ours to do our best and save land and habitats for wildlife, And for people around the province to utilize as well".

All the proceeds from the program go directly to helping preserve currently protected habitats and create more area dedicated to wildlife.

"For wildlife in particular, they are just like us and they need food, water, shelter and space so by saving these habitats it gives animals the potential things that they need to survive, thrive and continue doing what they do", stated Newberry.

While more work still needs to be done, efforts continue to grow in making the prairies safe for the animals who call them their home. Newberry outlined some of the goals for preservation over the next 10 years.

"The Habitat Trust program is celebrating our 40th birthday (this year) and currently we own 68,000 acres of land across the province and our goal is to reach 100,000 acres".
