As most around the friendly city are preparing for, and enjoying the Christmas season, the worlds Jewish community began celebrating Hanukkah today.

Hanukkah is an eight day Jewish celebration which commemorates the first documented victory against religious oppression and freedom.

The eight day celebration usually begins with the lighting of a menorah.

Avrohom Simmonds, Co-director of the Chabad Jewish centre in Regina, says Hanukkah is similar to other holidays;

"Like every holiday the decorations definitely add to the holiday spirit. People may be decorating their houses with the Jewish or Hannukah symbol, menorahs, or dreidels."

"Lighting the menorah is the highlight. As well as lots of traditional foods like donuts of all different flavours, and potato pancakes called latkes".

Simmonds will be at the Legislature in Regina Wednesday night lighting a 20 foot menorah with Premier Brad Wall and Regina Mayor Michael Fougere.
