While many students returned back to class on Tuesday, it was also the first day back to school for the Moose Jaw Police Service's school resource officer.

Const. Kyle Cunningham, a former teacher, has been on the job for over three years.

He said his job is mainly to do presentations for students.

"We've got a number of presentations mostly geared towards a safety focus. So, we've got drugs and driving-related issues for upper teens, knowing the law and understanding their place in it as young people. We do for younger grades stranger danger all the way down to Kindergarten to bullying to online safety."

Also, like the students, this school year is going to look very different for Cunningham as well because of the COVID-19 pandemic as most of his working is being done off-site when possible.

"It's different school year for sure, but we still absolutely support everything that the schools do. A lot of it is done by phone, what we can do, and some of it obviously if we need to be in-person than we'll go through those procedures to enter the school."

The school resource officer is part of the Moose Jaw Police Service's strategic services unit, where community resource officers engage with the community and work with partners within Moose Jaw.
