Eighteen-year-old Jasmine Kohl of Vanier Collegiate received some financial support for her post-secondary education on Monday afternoon in the way of a scholarship.

Kohl was the recipient of a $3,000 scholarship, which was the result of funds raised from the "Women Fore Women" Golf Tournament that is held annually in August at the Hillcrest Golf Club.

“I’m honoured to get this scholarship,” says Kohl. "It means a lot to me that there are a lot of women giving back to women. This is kind of my motto to keep being a role model for others and I would like to join these types of things and give back to the younger generations and keep it moving forward. This scholarship means a lot to me.”

The idea around the tournament is a way for young female athletes in Moose Jaw to be recognized for their success in sports and help them with their post-secondary education.

Kohl is a multisport athlete, as she played three seasons with the Prince Albert Northern Bears within the Saskatchewan Female U18 AAA Hockey League (SFU18AAAHL), and she also plays competitive softball.

In 64 games with the Northern Bears, Kohl notched 29 points. This past season, Kohl and the Northern Bears hosted the Esso Cup, which is the national championship for U18 AAA Female hockey in Canada.

The scholarships were competed for by senior students in Moose Jaw high schools. The applicants were graded on their marks, and strong leadership skills, along with a multi-faceted 500-word essay on themselves, the role of sports and school in their lives, and much more.

When writing her essay, Kohl explained how she has given back to sports and the community of Moose Jaw and Prince Albert.

“I talked about how I love helping out everyone and this scholarship is how these women have come together for this tournament to help me,” adds Kohl. “I want to be like them, they are my role models and I want to pass that along.”

The 18-year-old Moose Jaw product will be taking her talents south of the border next year to Lake Forest College in Chicago, to play hockey and softball for both of the Foresters NCAA Division III teams. While in the Windy City, she will be taking Psychology.

“It’s a new opportunity, new friends, and a new environment. It has helped that I have a lot of support from a lot of people. I’m really excited to be in a high-level sport. I’ve wanted to be the best of the best everywhere and I feel this will help me reach my goals.”

Kohl is one of five female athletes to be presented with a $3,000 scholarship. The other four athletes will receive their scholarships on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Hillcrest Golf Club.

This is the first time in their four-year history of the event they have been able to present $3,000 per winner. In the past, $500 and $2,000 scholarships were given out.

Deb Negraiff, who is a retired teacher is among three Hillcrest ladies that are responsible for the scholarship portion and says that it’s great to see the scholarship amount continually increase.

“When we took a look at it at the end of last year, this is what we recommended to do the five, $3,000 scholarships,” says Negraiff.

Since starting the tournament four years ago, Negraiff says that the popularity has grown, and they are seeing more and more applicants each year.

“I couldn’t feel any better about this, I’m so proud of them and so grateful for our community support,” adds Negraiff.

The fifth-annual Women Fore Women Golf Tournament will take place this year on August 19 at the Hillcrest. Negraiff says that already they have 73 golfers registered for the tournament.

Registration remains open and for more information, those interested in attending can call the Hillcrest Golf Club at 306-693-1921 or Negraiff at 306-631-6557
