The new joint-use school on South Hill is in the design process, according to an update the Holy Trinity School Division board.

The new joint-use school will be located at Westheath on South Hill, and will necessitate the closure of Empire, and Westmount Schools in the Prairie South School Division, and St. Mary and Sacred Heart Schools in the Holy Trinity School Division.

The steering committee heard from staff and parents, as well as students, according to the director of education Sean Chase. Some of those ideas were presented to trustees at Monday’s board meeting.

“One of the things that was most exciting for us was just to see the creativity, and I showed the trustees a few examples of some videos submissions from young students who had built models through things such as Lego, cardboard boxes or Play-doh, all sorts of creative ideas in terms of what their future hopes and dreams are,” said Chase.

At the board meeting earlier this week, Chase said they talked quite a bit about the process of getting the land in West Heath.

“We’ve also had quite an extensive engagement with our community members over the last three weeks, regarding the design for the school,” Chase said. “We surveyed parents of all four of the schools, and parents were able to provide feedback, as were all the staff involved from all four schools.”

The initial design process will include getting feedback from stakeholders in the coming months. Chase said they don’t expect to see that design in the public for another nine to twelve months.

Chase said they have had a good co-operative relationship with both the Prairie South members and the ministry of education.
