Five one-month-old kittens were found abandoned overnight last week at the Moose Jaw Humane Society’s porch with the door left open.

When executive director Dana Haukaas came into work early on Thursday morning she found a container with a cardboard note saying there were five one-month-old kittens inside.

Because the door to the porch was left open, there was the risk that the kittens could have wandered off. All of the kittens were healthy and accounted for. The kittens are currently in foster care until they are old enough to stay at the shelter.

According to the humane society’s security camera footage, the kittens were dropped off late Wednesday night.

It serves as a reminder that you should call the shelter to arrange to drop animals off, as opposed to leaving the animal at their doorstep unannounced, so staff can get background information and ensure the animal’s safety.

“It's so important for us to get background information about the animals that come into us because those questions we ask are what help us get them into their forever homes and hopefully in the right situation. If we have a dog who doesn't like cats, it's important that we know that so we don't adopt them out to a home with a cat,” Haukaas said.

If you have a pet you need to surrender to the shelter, Haukaas said the humane society will not judge a person’s situation.

“We understand that people's life circumstances change with the cost of even groceries to feed your family going up,” she said.

“We understand that there are times when you can't keep your family pet and we are willing to work with anybody to make sure that their animals are healthy and we will help them as much as we can.”

If someone is just experiencing a bump in the road, Haukaas added that the humane society will do what it can so that the owner can keep the pet including helping with cat or dog food temporarily until you can get back on your feet.

If you need to drop off an animal at the shelter, there are staff available to take calls 24/7 for emergencies. After-hour emergency calls can be made by calling 306-692-1517 and selecting option one.
