The news spread from coast to coast to coast in a matter of hours but the shock and condolences continue to come in.

Canada is in mourning today after Leader of the Opposition NDP Jack Layton passed away early Monday morning after a second fight with cancer.  Family and friends were by his side.

It doesn't seem to matter what party you support or if you even voted in the last election, Canadians everywhere are remembering Jack Layton for his enthusiasm and dedication to the country he loved.

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall is one of the many leaders making that clear today. "Whether or not people agreed with everything that Mr. Layton espoused and promoted... that's really secondary today. Today we salute somebody who dedicated their life to public service."

Flags at the Saskatchewan Legislature will be flown at half-mast until Layton's funeral and we're being invited to sign a book of condolences for the Layton family, which is set up in the Legislature Rotunda.

Funeral arrangements are now being made for Layton with the help of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Harper has extended a state funeral to Layton's family to honour his contributions to Canada. An honour normally reserved for Prime Ministers, Governor Generals and some cabinet ministers.

Layton's family has accepted and he will be laid to rest on Saturday in Toronto.

The legacy of Jack Layton even made it into Moose Jaw City Council Monday night as our municipal leaders took a moment to remember a dedicated individual.

Mayor Glenn Hagel pointed out that not only was Layton a federal politician, he also worked on the municipal level serving as a city councillor of Toronto and as the president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

"It is my belief that Canada has lost a good public servant and we would want to extend sympathies to his family and to know that he will be remembered in our prayers and in our fond memories."
