Deb Higgins says it’s an unfortunate situation in southern Saskatchewan as our local public school board faces a $5.7 million dollar deficit.

We mentioned last week that the Prairie South School Division is staring a 5.7 million dollar deficit square in the face as they attempt to work out their budget for 2006-07.

School closures, staff cuts, and tax increases are all real possibilities.

Learning Minister Deb Higgins says this is not an easy situation for those involved. "There's been a couple of very busy and stressful years in all of the school divisions across Saskatchewan with the amalgamations. It really gets down to the dollars that are available, the students that are in the divisions, and I think many of the school divisions are looking at, if there is a need to make changes, what will happening in the upcoming years?"

One of the contributing factors to the deficit is a declining enrollment according to the Prairie South Board.

A decision from the local school board is expected in the next couple months.
