Three members of the Moose Jaw Koseikan Judo Club competed as part of Team Saskatchewan at the Pacific International Judo Tournament this past weekend (Jan 27-29) in Abbotsford, BC.

Avery Gibney won a silver medal in the U18 - 52kg category.

"I fought the girl pretty hard, but she ended up winning," said Gibney. "She's really good, so I expected that. It was still a pretty good day for me, I was proud and I got silver."

Avery also took 5th place in the Senior - 52kg category.

Felix Leonard won bronze in the U14 - 46kg category. Also competing was Kolbi Fenrick.

Team Sask will be staying in Abbotsford to train with Team BC and Team Quebec before returning home this week.

Avery's next 3 big events are:
Canada Games as a member of Team Sask (Feb 26 - March 5)
Edmonton International Judo Championship (March 10-12)
U18 Thuringia Cup in Germany (March 25-29) as a member of Team Canada

She commented on the upcoming trip to Germany.

"That will be a completely new battlefield. Once you travel overseas to compete in judo, it's just a whole new thing. Europeans are very scary, it will be a big challenge but I'm super excited. Probably the first couple of times I travel internationally, I'm going to get beaten up a bit, but that's kind of how you learn. You just keep going, keep getting beaten up until event, ually you can at least hold your ground."

Kolbi will also compete at Canada Games and Edmonton International in the 57kg category.
