Car thieves are having an easy time of it in Moose Jaw lately.

Since September 1, Moose Jaw Police say there have been 21 stolen vehicles and 35 thefts from vehicles in the city.  Though Sgt. Rick Johns says a pattern hasn't been detected, but there is one commonality to the crimes.

"Three-quarters of the vehicles that were reported stolen had the keys somewhere in the vehicle at the time of the theft," explained Johns. "We haven't really seen a lot of damage to the vehicles at all, it seems like they are unlocked doors."

Johns also says that in the majority of cases, the incidents are happening while the vehicles are parked on their owner's property.

"It's usually later at night (when the crimes occur)," Johns stated. "In some cases even garage door openers have been taken and used to gain access into the garage, which would allow them access to even more valuables."

"I guess the message would be to try and remove valuables from your vehicle if you choose to leave it unlocked," Johns continued. "Some people prefer to leave it unlocked thinking 'well if I leave it unlocked then (criminals) won't break the window'."

The police are pushing a simple slogan in an effort to reduced the number of stolen vehicles and thefts - "If you don't lock it you might lose it".

But, if you do "lose it" or even notice something suspicious in your area, you're asked to call Moose Jaw Police at 306-694-7600.

Or, if it's a crime in progress, call 9-1-1.
