The nomination papers are starting to pile up as 16 candidates fight it out for just 6 spots on City Council.

We now have 16 candidates for City Council as Nomination Day in Moose Jaw creeps closer and closer. Tony Dreger, Walt Yakiwchuk, and Mike Hataley have now filed their paperwork at City Hall.

Dreger feels like there's some unfinished business and that's why he's running for a second term. The first term councillor has filed his nomination papers for City Council and says the multiplex is easily the number one topic for this civic election. "Our hockey rink is 50 years old and its getting tired. Our curling facility is getting very tired and then something that we don't have are a field house and a walking track so those are things that I think our community would be open to and could use dearly."

Dreger says in the last campaign he wanted to be a councilor to help grow our city, and feels the multiplex is the project to do just that.

As well, Walt Yakiwchuk is trying to keep his seat on council. If elected this would be Yakiwchuk's third straight term.

While speaking with Yakiwchuk about his decision to run he mentioned that he's pleased that at least 15 other names will be on the ballot. "It indicates the kind of interest that is in the community and certainly people have an opportunity to express their views and concerns. I don't know the candidates or who they are but I think that its a very healthy proposition where, in during election time, there are a number of candidates willing to step forward and serve their community,"

Keeping with the trend of experienced councillors running in this election, Mike Hataley is back for another civic election. This will be the 6th straight civic election in which we'll find Hataley's name on the ballot.

Hataley was defeated 3 years ago after serving 12 straight years on council and he wants to be a part of it all once again. "I think it’s a very exciting time in our history here and we had things moving and I'd like to see them moving again."

And, Hataley is reminding us about all the projects that went ahead while he was on council from 1991 until 2003. "We had Raider move in, we had the south east 9th Avenue under pass that was done, we had Wal-Mart, Superstore, the casino, Temple Gardens, McDonalds, the Kinsmen swimming pool was built so its exciting and I'd like to see more of what's going on."

The pressure is now on other aspiring councillors in Moose Jaw as the deadline for nominations creeps closer. Wednesday at 4pm is the deadline for nominations at City Hall.
