A shooting involving a police officer resulted in a portion of the Trans-Canada Highway being closed near Belle Plaine Sunday morning for a substantial period of time.

The incident started shortly after 1:00 a.m. in Moose Jaw, after police there received a call about a man who was in possession of a firearm and uttering threats. He was located in the parking lot of the Superstore in Moose Jaw.

The RCMP's Critical Incident Response Team and the Regina Police Service SWAT team came to assist with the incident, while officers from the Moose Jaw police continued to talk to the man. He would end up driving off, leaving the parking lot and heading east on the Trans-Canada Highway.

The vehicle was pulled over on the highway near Belle Plaine, with the RCMP CIRT, Regina Police Service SWAT and Moose Jaw Police Service Tactical Unit arriving to assist. Negotiators from the Moose Jaw Police Service continued to talk with the man to try to de-escalate the situation.

Around 7:00 a.m., police say the man pointed a firearm at officers, and he refused to comply with the commands of the officers. A shot was fired, and while officers with medical training attempted to assist, the man died at the scene.

The man, a 27-year-old from Moose Jaw, was identified by the officers and his family has been notified.

The Saskatoon Police Service has been contacted to conduct an independent third-party investigation into the shooting. As well, the Moose Jaw Police Service and the RCMP have requested an independent observer be appointed, as per the Saskatchewan Police Act.
