A man received time served and a six-month conditional sentence order after pleading guilty to multiple charges in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Tuesday.

Cole Jones spent 84 days in remand and received 126 days enhanced credit. As part of a joint submission between defense lawyer Merv Nidesh and Crown prosecutor Rob Parker, Jones was sentence to time served for common assault, assault causing bodily harm, unlawful confinement and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Jones was then sentenced to a conditional sentence order for six months for property crimes including breaking and entering, arson, theft of a Ford F-350 truck and the theft of an Oldsmobile Alero car.

Jones was assessed at the Saskatchewan Mental Health Hospital in North Battleford, which Nidesh said was taken into consideration when crafting the plea deal. The recommendations from the mental health hospital said Jones struggles with addictions to alcohol and street drugs and needs a community support system. Nidesh added that, if it weren’t for the severity of the crimes, Jones would have qualified for Drug Treatment Court.

Judge David Chow reminded Jones that a conditional sentence order is basically a jail sentence served in the community and breaking the conditions could result in additional charges and a possible jail sentence.

The conditions include an 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew, abstain from alcohol, cannabis or drugs not prescribed by a doctor and participate in programming as directed by his probation officer. Jones also received a 10-year firearms prohibition and must provide police with a DNA sample.

The charges stem back to March 19, when RCMP received a 9-1-1 call from the ranch in the Wood Mountain area. The victim was in a relationship with Jones and had confronted him about dropping off her belongings.

The confrontation ended up in the bathroom in the ranch house where Jones attacked the victim and wouldn’t allow her to leave the ranch. The victim received injuries as a result of the attack.

The victim was in no condition to give a sworn statement. However, three days later she attended the Assiniboia RCMP detachment where she gave a sworn statement about that incident and she told officers she was in an abusive relationship with Jones where he would assault her including grabbing her hair, throwing her around, pushing, dragging and slapping her.

On Aug. 14, Milestone RCMP received a report of a stolen Ford F-350 truck. Jones was observed dropping the truck off in a farmyard and taking an Oldsmobile Alero from the property.

Officers found the Alero badly burnt and a 9 mm handgun on the seat of the vehicle.

On Sept. 5 near Crane Valley Jones broke into a house through a bedroom window. Jones left the house but was later found napping in a field.
