A man sent to jail for a violent crime in Moose Jaw last year has died while in custody at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert.

Curtis Robert Cozart was charged with Possession of a Weapon Dangerous to the Public, Assault with a Weapon, Resisting Arrest and Breach of a Court Order following an standoff with Moose Jaw Police in September of 2016. He was convicted in October and ordered to spend his jail term at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary.

Correctional Service Canada has released few details, but say Cozart was transported to hospital Wednesday evening, where he was pronounced dead.  They add that foul play is not suspected.

They say his family has been notified and the incident is under review.
