A woman from Moose Jaw has made the Team Canada Football team and is set to go to Finland for the International Federation of American Football World Championship.

Moose Jaw’s Alex Kowalski plays for the Regina Riots female football team. She and 9 other players tried out for Team Canada in Ottawa in early May with only 9 of the 10 women making the cut for the team.

“It’s pretty cool. Women’s football is definitely growing so that’s a good thing. Going to Finland will be pretty cool too with a bunch of girls that have the same passion,” says Kowalski.

The championship is in August in Vantaa Finland. This is currently the highest level of players for women’s football.

Now since the women are getting ready to take over the championship, each woman must pay a $4000 fee to be on Team Canada and compete.

This fee covers the cost of airfare, accommodations, food, fees for two weeks of training camp and one week of competing for the gold medal.

In total, $36,000 is needed for all 9 players to compete with Team Canada.

In light of that, the women have decided to put on fundraising efforts to help cover the costs.

“We have a gofundme going for the group of Regina Riot athletes and we’re also having a steak night on June 21st at Aspen Links in White City,” says Kowalski.

The women are hoping to raise half of their total costs through fundraising.

You can find the gofundme page here.

Tickets are $30 for the team's steak dinner in White City. They can be purchased by messaging Kowalski on Facebook.
