A group of medical professionals are about to embark on a medical mission to Guatemala at the beginning of February.

This team includes Moose Javians, one of whom is Carie Yashuck, a long time pediatrician nurse, as well as her son Kade, who is currently in his third year at the University in Regina completing his nursing degree.

"I've always been interested and thought it would be a very great experience to be able to go on one of these trips," said Carie. "This year it's unique in the sense that we're kind of having two teams going, one is a surgical team and one's a medical team. The surgical is what have gone the last two years and they work out of the hospital...the medical team is being headed by Dr. Mark Brown, from Moose Jaw, and there is a team of us that will each day venture out to a different community clinic and see patients that way."

Despite her excitement, Carie noted that she does have a few reservations regarding the different kind of care they will be able to provide.

"I'm a little concerned in the sense that to come across children that maybe we won't necessarily have all that we need to do everything for them... I'm concerned that I'm going to find that difficult, especially when I know what we can offer them here."

The pair have also been warned about the long hours, and conditions they will have to work in. However, they both have detailed their excitement to be going this year and the chance to change someones life in how they can receive medical care.

Kade is a third year nursing student at the University of Regina and has followed in his mother's footsteps of becoming a nurse, but added that he's not sure where in the medical field he will land in the future.

The team will board the plane of February 2nd and come home on the 11th. Prior to their departure the local medical professionals who are participating are hosting two fundraisers. The first is on January 11th at the Crushed Can, with food and a trivia game for $25 a ticket. The second and final fundraiser is on January 20th and will feature the band Stadacona Soul at the art museum.
