The Hillcrest Sportscentre will continue to be busy this winter,  even with curling being moved to Mosaic Place.

The City of Moose Jaw originally planned on closing the building this fall with curling making the move downtown.  The building was offered to the Hillcrest Golf Club but they declined saying they wanted nothing to do with it, in fact, they stated they wanted an entirely new building to serve as their clubhouse.

With no one wanting to operate the building, the decision was made to close it after the 2011 golf season. But the decision would have left several groups out in the cold.  Gymtastics, roller derby and some dog sports use the Sportscentre but with it closing, they were scrambling to figure out a plan.

Earlier this month, they presented that plan to City Council and it was a simple one.  Let them stay where they are and take over the building.  The expenses and the revenue would be their responsibility. City Council has agreed to let them try and have approved a one-year joint lease between Gymtastics and the Hillcrest Golf Club.

Gymtastics board chair Lisa McLeod is very excited that they will get the chance to be successful. "We are going to be adding a cheerleading portfolio and we are going to be able to generate revenue by leasing out the spaces in the basement of the Hillcrest. Roller derby is going to stay so that will give us some rental income as well as the one side of the building that is currently vacant, we are looking at leasing that part out to a few different interested tenants."

The lease will be on a year by year basis allowing any party to end the agreement if they find things just aren't working out.
