After an April in which over 8,000 drivers were issued tickets, involving just speeding and aggressive driving offences, the month of May was another busy one for RCMP officers in Saskatchewan.

May 14 to 20 was Canada Road Safety Week. The week saw increased patrols and check stops were set up across the province, with enforcement focusing on impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and seat belt enforcement etc.

Statistics were released, and from across Saskatchewan RCMP jurisdictions, police made contact with 14,423 drivers.

During this period, over 3,200 charges were laid, some of which include 63 charges due to alcohol impairment, one charge laid due to drug impairment, 2,045 charges laid due to speeding/aggressive driving,131 charges related to distracted driving, including use of electronic devices, and 141 charges laid for seatbelt violations.

To go along with the over-3,200 charges, 1,802 warnings and 329 inspection notices were issued.

Of the charges listed, the majority happened over the long weekend where 54 charges were issued due to alcohol impairment and one charge due to drug impairment.

There were 1,416 charges laid because of speeding/aggressive driving, 61 charges due to distracted driving and 89 charges laid for seatbelt violations.
