City Council has approved an increase to parks and recreation fees for 2019.

During budget talks, it was explained that the city strives to recover an average of 50% of the cost to run the various facilities across Moose Jaw. With that in mind, the Parks and Rec Advisory Board recommended a 2% increase effective June 1st.

That motion was given initial approval this week and works out to an approximate $2 increase for ice rental for minor hockey or figure skating. The only rate that wouldn't be impacted is Kinsmen Sportsplex membership and admission rates.

Earlier in the budget process, council also initially approved work to start on a new Active Living Program for employees that will offer free access to city facilities for things like the walking track at Yara Centre, swimming at the Kinsmen or skating at a local rink. The idea is that active employees are often healthier and happier.

The perk is not expected to have an impact on the budget and is only for permanent active city employees.
