The Vanier Spirits were in control of sets one and two on Thursday night, but for the second straight game, couldn't finish it off.

The Peacock Toilers took advantage and cruised to a three-set win over the Spirits at Vanier during Thursday's Moose Jaw High School Senior Girls Volleyball action.

“The first two sets, we had a solid point lead on them and we let the pressure go, we let them catch up and once they got that momentum, it was hard to stop,” said Vanier head coach Rikki Bell.

“In the third set, we just stopped working as a team and it was six individuals out there.”

Peacock won 25-15, 25-21 and 25-8 to take the game.

“The passing kind of fell apart in that third set and that's kind of what did us in,” said Bell.

After falling down in the first two sets, Peacock put together an aggressive attack to get back into the games and it worked.

“We've finally started playing well together as a team, we've finally clicked,” said Peacock captain Ceanna Bruce. “In the past, we haven't played together as a team through an entire game, so it was nice to be able to do do that right from the start.”

Since losing out in the quarterfinals at the Moose Jaw tournament last weekend, the Toilers had a week of practice to prepare for Thursday's game and it paid off according to Bruce.

“We had really strong practices over the past week to get ready for this game and it worked,” she said.

“Our defence has been the biggest area of improvement. When we started, we didn't move our feet on defence, but now we're starting to move and covering each other and it's really nice.”

For the second straight game this week, Vanier put together strong starts in sets, but couldn't finish off their opponent. Bell said that's the biggest thing standing between them and success right now.

“I know they have it in them, I've seen glimpses of it all through league play, but it's just about working together for the full 25 points that we need to win,” she said.

In the only other senior girls game on Thursday night, Caronport topped Rouleau in straight sets (25-7, 25-22, 25-14).

On the boys side, Peacock topped Vanier in three straight sets (25-9, 25-18, 25-20); Cornerstone won in five sets over Central (25-27, 15-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-8); and Avonlea beat Caronport in five sets (25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 20-25, 15-11).

The Moose Jaw Senior Boys Volleyball Tournament is being held on Friday and Saturday at Central, Peacock and Vanier with games starting Friday afternoon at 2:30pm. The final games of the round robin will get underway at 7:00pm on Friday night.

The playoff round starts at 8:30am with the final getting underway at 6:30pm.
