Dashes represent proposed expansion

More than 100 protesters were arrested on Parliament Hill Monday in a demonstration against a proposed pipeline that will carry Alberta crude to Texas. They were among several hundred people who gathered in front of the Peace Tower to oppose the Keystone XL pipeline as a risk to the environment.

The expansion will pass through southwest Saskatchewan, within a few kilometres of Shaunavon, but Town Administrator Charmaine Bernath says it will bring financial benefits to the region not environmental concerns.

"With previous pipeline expansions there have been camps in town which have boosted the local economy. There are spin offs with accommodations and food and just having the extra people around."

While protestors in Ottawa call the project a potential risk to North America, Bernath says their town council hasn't expressed any concerns over the environmental issues. She says they're confident in the safety initiatives utilized in the process of building and operating the pipeline.
