Scott Joseph was able to get familiar with Moose Jaw's Gutheridge Field on Saturday. The Swift Current Comprehensive High School athlete put on a show during the Moose Jaw Invitational high school track-and-field meet, picking up four gold medals and a record throughout the day.

"I'm happy with my performance," said Joseph. "I was hoping to have a better start to my races but I finished strong, now I know that I need a lot of work in practice."

There were 436 athletes from 29 schools around the province in Moose Jaw for the annual meet on Saturday. Swift Current's track team led the medal standings with 24 gold and 63 medals, while Peacock (43), Vanier (39) and Central (25) were second, third and fourth, respectively. Joseph won gold in the senior boys' 100-metre with a time of 11.12 seconds, he also took top spot in the 200-metre dash with a time of 22.51 seconds in the final.

In long jump, Joseph came close to a record with a best jump of 6.24 metres. He would get the record in triple jump, soaring 13.45 metres to break the record of 13.31 metres that was set last year by Assiniboia's Logan Fettes.

"It felt pretty good, it's still not the result that I wanted but I'm happy with it," said Joseph, who has a personal best jump of 14.64m.

Joseph will no doubt be one of the athletes competing in Moose Jaw next month for the SHSAA track-and-field provincial championship, so getting a lay of the land on Saturday will pay dividends down the road this season.

Joseph said that getting a meet in at Gutheridge Field before provincials could be huge, "You need to know the feel of the track, the sand and the runways too, so this will help," he said.

Central's Crozier Holmes was going head-to-head with Joseph throughout the day, finishing second to him in both the 100 and 200. Holmes said going against a talented athlete like Joseph will push him to be better moving forward.

"It's a good thing for sure," he said. "When you're not racing against the fastest guys then you lose that motivation so it was definitely good to be racing a guy like him and that will help me a lot."

Holmes had a strong day overall, winning the 400-metre dash with a time of 54.54 seconds, which was almost three full seconds clear of second place.

He was also fifth in discus.

The Cyclones senior said that he's pleased with where he is right now but after competing in four events, he needs to work on improving his endurance moving forward.

"In the morning I felt pretty good but as the day went on, I kind of got more tired and my times kind of reflect that, but overall it was pretty good," said Holmes.

"I've still got a lot of work to do in terms of [stamina] but it was a good practice."

The final mini-meet of the season goes on Wednesday at Gutheridge Field.

Cornerstone's Block Breaks Two Records

Cornerstone grade nine Aliyah Block was rewriting the midget girls' record book on Saturday at the Moose Jaw Invitational.

She launched a record-setting throw of 10.95 metres in shot put and another one of 30.21 metres in discus.

"I was really excited to leave a mark, it wasn't my best throws but I was still really excited about it," said Block.

Block's discus throw broke the record of 27.84m that had stood since 1998, while her shot put throw broke the two-year-old record of 10.66m.

Both of Block's record-setting throws actually came up short of her personal bests of 35.10 and 11.82 in discus and shot put, respectively, which means there's still room to grow this season.

"It's a bunch of little things that make a difference and sometimes you just unconsciously don't do them so part of it is muscle memory and just keep working hard, which I have been doing," said Block.

"I'm really excited for what's ahead."

Central's Akoul Riak also broke the record in the midget girls' 400-metre with a time of 1:01.71, while the Swift Current senior girls 4x100m relay team set a new mark with a time of 52:60 seconds.
