Damaged tires, delays and more. Motorists were in for a nasty surprise earlier this week as they entered the Regina bypass and passed over the weigh scale, only to find the plate covering the equipment was missing.

Reports came in that indicated at least six vehicles had their tires damaged as a result, and the affected lane had to be closed while bypass teams addressed the damaged scale.

The Regina Bypass team issued a statement about the incident:

On Tuesday, April 8th the Regina Bypass team was informed that there was damaged equipment on Highway 1 west of Regina.

A plate encasing equipment embedded in the roadway was torn off by an unidentified vehicle. Exposed parts from the embedded area (normally covered) damaged vehicle tires.

The Bypass team closed the lane until the damaged area could be repaired.

The damaged equipment is used to provide "in motion" weighing of passing trucks.

The Regina Bypass will provide assistance handling claims of motorists related to this incident.

The Regina Bypass takes public concerns seriously and offers a 24-hour line at 1-844-257-7971, which can also be used for emergencies, reporting road conditions, and inquiries.
