Will schools be closed, will teachers be laid off, and will special classes be cancelled? Those questions and more are being discussed as the local school division deals with a major budget shortfall.

Meetings are underway in communities around the Prairie South School Division as the school board tried to find the answer to the 5 million dollars question. How do we prevent another major budget deficit?

As we've reported, Prairie South is facing a 5.7 million-dollar budget shortfall this year and a declining enrollment is part of the problem.

Moose Jaw's Ecole Ross School, Briercrest, Chaplin, Crane Valley, Eyebrow, Willow Bunch and Limerick schools are all under review. Board Chair Gordon Stewart says feedback is important at this stage. "Its a review of these schools and we want to meet with the people in the community and hear from them about how their school can be viable and sustainable and how we can go about doing that."

The Prairie South School Board needs to make some decisions at their board meeting on February 1st.
