The Saskatchewan Roughriders prevailed in a Banjo Bowl game that had a bit of everything on Saturday at Investors Group Field.

The Riders' defence scored two touchdowns, while Brett Lauther kicked six field goals to lead Saskatchewan to a 32-27 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

"Anytime you can come in here and get a win, they're a good football team over there," said Riders head coach Chris Jones after the game.

"We certainly didn't play very well, we made enough plays to help us have enough turnovers to win the game, but we need to play better man coverage, I thought we defended the run a bit better than we did the first time out."

This was the fourth straight win for the Riders and the fourth straight loss for the Bombers. Saskatchewan finishes a tough stretch of six straight games against the West Division with a 4-2 record and they're holding down second place, just two points behind the Calgary Stampeders.

"We've got a bunch of guys that believe in each other and we have some very good athletes that play very hard," said Jones. "In our third year here with our program, we feel good that once we solidify things, we can compete with anybody."

The Riders trailed 10-0 after the first quarter, but that changed in the second quarter thanks to a pair of long interception return touchdowns by the defence.

Defensive end Willie Jefferson got Saskatchewan on the board with a 97-yard pick-six just 50 seconds into the second quarter. Then with only 1:08 left in the half, linebacker Sam Eguavon intercepted Bombers quarterback Matt Nichols and took it 103 yards to the end zone to make it 20-17 for Saskatchewan after two quarters.

"I hadn't seen that before probably ever," said Jones after the game on the two lengthy interception returns.

"It was a tough fought game and you have to give them credit for scrapping around and coming back, we came from behind, it was a classic game."

Jefferson and Eguavon both had massive games with three tackles, a sack and an interception each.

"Willie really affected the pocket today, he had the big sack there at the end and he's getting double protection just about every time, and then he made the big play in cover zero when he was able to pick it off and run for a touchdown," said Jefferson. "He can really effect ball games."

Lauther provided all of the second half offence for the Riders as he nailed four field goals to finish six-for-six in the game and hold off the Bombers over the final 30 minutes.

Two third-quarter field goals from Lauther extended Saskatchewan's lead to 26-17, but the Bombers responded in the fourth quarter. Backup QB Chris Streveler found Daniel Petermann for a nine-yard touchdown to cut the Riders' lead down to two points.

Winnipeg kicker Justin Medlock would move the Bombers back in front for the first time since the second quarter with a 21-yard field goal with 7:05 remaining in the game. The Bombers went two-and-out on their next two possessions, while Lauther hit from 15 and 45 yards out to seal the win for Saskatchewan.

Riders quarterback Zach Collaros left the game in the fourth quarter with an injury, but no update was available for him after the game. He was 13-of-24 for 173 yards and an interception, which was return for the first touchdown of the game.

Saskatchewan is now 5-1 in games that Collaros gets the start.

Brandon Bridge finished the game for the Riders, going 3-of-6 for 32 yards.

Running back Tre Mason surpassed the 100-yard mark for the first time in his CFL career as he slashed his way to 117 yards on 20 carries. He had 38 yards in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Nichols was 10-of-20 for 165 yards and three interceptions before being replaced by Streveler, who also went 10-of-20 for 160 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

The Riders will return to the field next Saturday when they host the East Division-leading Ottawa Redblacks at Mosaic Stadium.
