The Saskatchewan Safety Council will be holding a free Mature Driver Refresher Course here in Moose Jaw on Oct. 16.

The course, which is geared towards 55-plus drivers, will be taking place at the Town N Country Mall from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a lunch break between noon and 1 p.m.

This course is intended to reinforce safe driving habits. Some of the topics that will be discussed include:

  • Normal driving situations such as intersections, following distances and maintaining an open “gate” around your vehicle.
  • Hazardous driving conditions including skids, head-on collisions, hydroplaning and how to protect yourself while driving.
  • Sign recognition and pavement markings.
  • A review of safety devices such as seatbelts and airbags.
  • Awareness of medication impairment, vision and effective eye use.

“It has been a long time, even I’m 30 years old and I forget half the things I learned in my driver's ed. back in high school. You can imagine as someone ages that you just get further and further from that initial education. Really that’s all it is, it’s a refresher on the rules of the road and covers a bit about how to adapt your driving habits based on the physical changes that your body goes through as it matures,” said Saskatchewan Safety Council new media specialist Rory McCusker.

Participants’ driver’s licenses will not be affected by this course and there are no examination requirements.

“We’ve heard things before about retesting and licenses being reviewed and we’re trying to get away from all that scary stuff. This is just a refresher course. Your license is not submitted and there are no required examinations. This is just for you to get as much as you want to learn out of the course in one day,” McCusker added.
