SARCAN will be relocating its Moose Jaw recycling facility at the end of the year.

Construction on a new $4 million facility started a couple of months ago at 52 Highland Road in the Grayson Business Park. The 11,000 square foot facility is expected to be completed sometime around December or January.

"We're moving to a bigger, brighter, better location," said Chantelle Diakuw, SARCAN's assistant director of collections. "The new location is going to be much bigger than the current one, meaning more room to serve customers, more room to grow, and more room to recycle even more materials from our awesome SARCAN customers in Moose Jaw."

The current recycling facility in Moose Jaw has been located at 50 Manitoba St E for over 20 years.

"SARCAN has grown as a whole over the last several years and the Moose Jaw location is the same," continued Diakuk. "It's just outgrown it's current space. We need more capacity for customers who return to the front counter. We need more capacity for Drop & Go customers. We just need more room."

SARCAN in Moose Jaw collects and recycles 17.6 million beverage containers per year in addition to paint, electronics, and batteries.

Diakuw addressed concerns that the new location will not be as accessible as the current one for some customers.

"We're confident that the new location is a geographically accessible location for all of our customers. We're aware that people come to us on foot, on bike, people car pool with each other to come to SARCAN. It's on a bus route and there's a bus stop right nearby."

She noted that the new facility is going to benefit both customers and employees.

"It's going to be a wonderful new place to work. We're in partnership to operate that depot with Moose Jaw Diversified Services, and they've been a great partner over all the years that we've been with them."

SARCAN's website says that over 80 per cent of containers sold in Saskatchewan are recycled at SARCAN. Ten billion beverage containers have been recycled provincewide since SARCAN opened in 1988.
