With the temperatures dipping below 40 degrees, SaskEnergy announced that the province set a record for gas usage.

From 9 a.m. on Monday to 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Saskatchewan residents used 1.57 petajoules (PJ). The previous record was 1.55 PJ that was set on Jan. 15, 2020.

Moose Jaw consumed 24 terajoules, according to SaskEnergy, or 1.5 per cent of the entire system consumption during that 24-hour period.

SaskEnergy says the average Saskatchewan home uses about 100 gigajoules was natural gas each year.

This is the eighth winter in a row that the province has either matched or broken a record for natural gas usage. SaskEnergy is attributing the higher usage to more customers and the increase in natural gas power production in Saskatchewan.

SaskEnergy says the pipeline systems are designed to handle the increased usage and infrastructure is inspected on a regular basis. The system is also monitored 24 hours a day to manage peak times such as the cold weather we have experienced.
