The big 5-0. Saskatchewan's flag turns 50 as of today and its all thanks to a man who entered a flag designing competition that ultimately decided what it would look like.

It all started when Anthony Drake entered and ultimately won a competition for the design of the flag in 1969.

MLA Warren Michelson celebrated the occasion with a come and go event at his office on High Street prior to the weekend.

Michelson added why he wanted to celebrate this important milestone.

"There wasn't an awful lot going on as far as promoting it, and it is significant. And with the flag, someone said 'it says everything about Saskatchewan in it's simplest form' and I thought that was a good phrase."
